For the convenience and enjoyment of WLS 2014 delegates, the WLA and Lottomatica have organized a selection of social events at WLS 2014, including the opening and closing dinners and sightseeing tours of Rome that take in some of Rome’s premier attractions.

The sightseeing tours are intended for first-time visitors who wish to take in some of the highlights of Rome as well as for lovers of the city. WLS 2014 delegates can book their selection of tours when they register for WLS 2014 through the dedicated WLS 2014 registration website.

Imperial Rome tour

“Imagining life in the Roman Empire"

Starting from the Piazza del Campidoglio, jewel of Renaissance architecture designed by Michelangelo as a natural terrace overlooking the Roman Forum, this nearly three (3) hours walk takes you through the traces of Imperial Rome. Walk among the impressive markets and see the triumphal column of the Emperor Trajan. Traverse the Via Sacra inside the Roman Forum, the former political, economic and religious centre of Ancient Rome and visit the magnificent Colosseum, the Roman Empire’s greatest amphitheatre.

Capitoline Hill and Roman Forum tour

“The real heart of the ancient city"

The tour starts from Piazza del Campidoglio, a jewel of Renaissance architecture designed by Michelangelo. It continues with a visit to the Capitoline Museums, the oldest museum in the world. The art collection there is located in historic buildings, which in the past were the seat of the civil power of the municipality of Rome. Halls painted in the late 1500s host the rich collection of classical antiquities. In the new pavilion one can admire the gilded bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman she-wolf, symbol of the Eternal City, as well as the impressive remains of the temple of Jupiter that once stood on this spot.

From the Tabularium, the Roman state archives, located between the ancient building and the new pavilion of the museums, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Roman Forum with monuments such as the Curia, the Arch of Septimius Severus, and the remains of the largest temples of the imperial age. The view over the place where Roman civilization began and evolved throughout the centuries is breathtaking.

Baroque Rome tour

Beginning from the centre of the city, this walk (duration: 2 hours 30 minutes) takes you past:

  • The Piazza di Spagna, including the Trinità dei Monti steps;
  • The Trevi Fountain, where legend has it that whoever throws a coin into the fountain will ensure that they one day return to Rome;
  • Piazza Colonna, with the Column of Emperor Marcus Aurelius; The Pantheon, the Roman temple built under Emperor Augustus, restored by Emperor Adriano and then transformed into a church;
  • San Luigi dei Francesi, the church that hosts three canvases by Caravaggio as well as frescoes by Domenichino;
  • Piazza Navona, with its unique elliptical plan and spectacular “Fountain of the Four Rivers”.

For its opening event, WLS 2014 invites you to Villa Miani, one of the most exclusive addresses in Rome. Situated on top of a hill overlooking St. Peter’s and its magnificent dome, the prestigious Villa Miani mansion offers one of the most stunning views in Rome, a view that over the centuries has inspired artists such as Piranesi and Vanvitelli. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, this elegant villa has a sixteenth century Venetian-style façade with a portico and several terraces, and is surrounded by a marvelous garden with high palm trees and exotic plants.

Palazzo Barberini tour

The palazzo is disposed around a forecourt centered on Bernini's grand two-storey hall backed by an oval salon, with an extended wing dominating the homonymous piazza, which lies on a lower level. Today, Palazzo Barberini houses the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, one of the most important painting collections in Italy, rich in XVI and XVII century masterpieces. The collection includes Raphael's portrait of “La Fornarina”, Caravaggio's “Judith beheading Holofernes” and “The triumph of divine providence” by Pietro da Cortona. The tour will last one hour.

To mark the end of a memorable convention, what better than to visit a magical wonderland?

The Cinecittà film studios are such a place. What makes Cinecittà special is its unique atmosphere, as if of living a permanent dream. Founded in 1937, the studios represent the jewel in the crown of Italian cinema. Every year, several prominent feature films and TV dramas are shot and post-produced here.

Have you ever tried to make pasta? You did, and it was okay, but somehow it just didn’t taste like the real thing? Then enjoy this unique opportunity to learn how to prepare a typically Italian pasta dish at the Eataly Rome megastore. The class gives you the opportunity to see the whole pasta-making process from a selection of basic ingredients.

A high-end Italian food market/mall chain encompassing a variety of restaurants, food and beverage stations, bakery, and retail items, Eataly opened in Turin, Italy, in January 2007. In 2010, Eataly went international with the opening of Eataly New York City. In 2012 it was Rome’s turn, with Eataly opening its megastore near Roma Ostiense station. Eataly’s Rome megastore is like a big grocery store with tasting rooms and featuring all the best food and beverage products in the country.

Upon arrival you’ll enjoy a cooking lesson (duration: 2 hours 30 minutes), afterwards tasting what you’ve prepared. After this cooking experience you will have a quick lunch at Restaurant Italia followed by approximately an hour to buy souvenirs to take back home.

Note: Eataly is on the way to Rome’s main airports. It is therefore possible to bring your luggage with you to Eataly and then proceed directly to Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Rome Ciampino (CIA) airports either by taxi (transfer time: 30 minutes) or, for Rome Fiumicino (FCO) airport only, by train (transfer time: 30 minutes). Taxis can be booked in advance.
