Ten good reasons to join us for the World Lottery Summit 2014 in Rome
Imagine Rome, the eternal city, with its culture and historical splendor, as the backdrop for one of the lottery industry’s most prestigious events. From November 2–5, 2014, less than 150 days from now, lottery professionals from around the world will converge on Rome, Italy for the World Lottery Summit 2014. The WLA and host lottery Lottomatica look forward to seeing you there. As this important date is rapidly approaching, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you that registration for WLS 2014 is open and present you with the following ten good reasons to join us in Rome.
01. Prominent keynote speakers
A hallmark of the WLA’s biennial flagship event is the host of internationally renowned keynote speakers that it brings together. Every two years leaders from the worlds of business, media, and sport are on hand to inform, enlighten, and inspire delegates. The roster of top-notch speakers joining us this November in Rome will include: Luca di Montezemolo, Chairman of Ferrari S.p.A.; Jane McGonigal, PhD, author of “Reality is broken: Why games make us better and how they can change the world”; Bertrand Piccard, initiator, chairman, and pilot of Solar Impulse; and Caroline de Fontenay, head of Google’s brand activation for France, Italy, and Spain. For a complete list of the keynote speakers and their biographies please see the list of keynote speakers on the official WLS 2014 website at wls2014.com.
02. Historical Rome
With a history spanning over 2,000 years, the eternal city has scintillating historic attractions around every corner. From the wonders of the Colosseum to the amazing Palatine Hill and the hidden secrets of San Clemente, Rome is brimming with fascinating historical places. As you find yourself meandering the same streets and alleyways where Julius Caesar, Augustus, and Constantine once trod you will realize that you are walking in the largest open-air museum in the world.
03. A broad educational track with absorbing parallel sessions
The business program will also feature three educational tracks, with nine parallel sessions in total, designed to provoke thought, broaden knowledge, and to deeply probe into the issues that are affecting the lottery industry today. These parallel sessions will give you access to some of the leading professionals in our business, who will touch on themes such as social media, sustainable advertising, and the constant threat of illegal off-shore betting operators. For details on the parallel sessions, please see the business program overview on the official WLS 2014 website wls2014.com.
04. Roman cuisine
Roman cuisine characteristically focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients, hence the food is good all year around. Vegetables, meats, fish, cheese, and of course, pasta and pizza are always prepared with the utmost care for detail. Cooking in Italy is an art and the time needed to achieve perfection is taken. In 1986, Italian political activist and journalist, Carlo Petrini protested against the opening of a McDonalds near the Spanish Steps, thereby founding the international Slow Food Movement. Of course no meal is complete without a glass of Italian wine, an espresso, and tiramisu for desert. For your convenience, we have provided a selection of restaurants in various price categories on the official WLS 2014 website at wls2014.com.
05. A multifaceted trade show
WLS 2014 will feature a trade show that is unparalleled in the lottery industry. Convention delegates can expect to find the latest in lottery systems and services on offer, from cutting-edge lottery technology to innovations in lottery marketing. The trade show officially opens on the evening of Sunday, November 2 with a soiree, just prior to the opening dinner, and will be combined with lunch on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, November 3 – 5. There will be ample opportunity for you to mix and mingle with some of the leading industry suppliers, as the WLS 2014 trade show has been structured to maximize opportunities for delegate and exhibitor interaction.
06. A wealth of art
In Rome, it is hard to get away from art. As mentioned before, the best museum in Rome is the city itself. With its impressive fountains, frescos, mosaics, paintings, and sculptures – all from different periods – Rome holds a myriad of cultural treasures both in its streets and in impressive museums and galleries. Among the most memorable of the latter is the Borghese Gallery (Galleria Borghese), which is housed in the Villa Borghese Pinciana. Highlights of Galleria Borghese include major works by Raphael, Rubens, Titian, Caravaggio, Bernini, Antonello da Messina, and Canova. On the more modern side the MAXXI Museo nazionale is dedicated to the art of the 21st century. Designed by Zaha Hadid, the Iraqi-British architect, the MAXXI, with its futuristic lines, stands in harmonious contrast to the wonders of ancient Rome. In the permanent collection at the MAXXI are the works of such contemporary artists as Alighiero Boetti, William Kentridge, or Kara Walker to name a few.
07. Outstanding networking opportunities
To ensure the right setting for networking with your international peers and colleagues an engaging and entertaining social program has been arranged. Beginning with Lottomatica’s generous hosting of the opening dinner at the elegant Villa Miani, and ending with the closing dinner and party at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, you can be certain that your schedule will be full from your arrival in Rome until your departure. Optional social events include an imperial tour of Rome, or a networking day consisting of an Italian cooking experience at EATALY – a high-end Italian food market dedicated to promoting a real understanding of quality food and drink. Contributor-sponsored events, to be announced separately by the contributors, will also enhance your experience at WLS 2014.
08. The Rome Cavalieri – a convention venue with class
The Rome Cavalieri, one of Italy’s most prestigious business and conference hotels, has been selected as the venue for WLS 2014. Enclosed by fifteen acres of Mediterranean parklands, the Rome Cavalieri overlooks a romantic panorama that has inspired visitors to Rome for centuries. Its convention facilities feature the latest and best in technology, and employ an experienced, professional team that will provide a full-service backup for WLS 2014. Art lovers will appreciate the fact that the Rome Cavalieri is also home to one of the greatest private art collections in the world. It houses well over a thousand artistic treasures in its public spaces and suites, which range from works of 16th century masters to modern-day contemporary artists.
09. Showcasing the best in lottery advertising and responsible gaming
Both responsible gaming and advertising are essential to the survival of a lottery organization. Traditionally the WLA honors its members for their efforts in advertising and responsible gaming by the bestowal of special awards for each category. The competitions for these awards, which take place at each of the WLA’s biennial conventions, afford WLA members the opportunity to showcase their programs in advertising and responsible gaming and to benchmark their efforts against the best in the industry. Entry requirements and competition details for both the WLA Advertising Awards and the WLA Responsible Gaming Awards can be found on the official WLS 2014 website at wls2014.com.
10. La grande bellezza – La dolce vita
Rome, mysterious and romantic, has provided the setting for a number of award-winning films. Who can forget the surreal and immortal Trevi Fountain scene with Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg in Federico Fellini’s magnum opus, La Dolce Vita? Or the more recent La Grande Bellezza, the 2013 Academy Award winning film, written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino? You will be able capture the spirit of Italian cinema at the WLS 2014 closing dinner, to be held at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, the largest television and film production facility in continental Europe. Cinecittà Studios is at the center of the Italian film industry, and has produced a number of big box office hits.
There are countless other reasons for you to attend WLS 2014. We urge you to register today to reserve your place at the lottery event of the year, the World Lottery Summit 2014, November 2–5 in Rome, Italy.
